H1N1 Flu Information

The H1N1 flu - a new and unpredictable hybrid of animal and human flu strains - is now in Wayne County. So far, symptoms and complications from this flu have proven to be similar to the "normal" flu viruses, but state and local health officials are taking extra steps to track and prevent the spread of this new flu. There have been no hospitalizations in Wayne County attributed to the new flu.

The flu spreads mostly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people so good hygiene is crucial. (see below)

Federal, state and Wayne County officials are learning new information about the H1N1 flu virus daily. To keep up-to-date, please check the following websites:

HELP PREVENT THE SPREAD OF H1N1 FLU

  • Staying home to prevent exposure of others is a standard precaution that should be taken any time someone has flu-like symptoms.
  • Stay informed. Check CDC and North Carolina sites regularly.
  • Practice good hygiene. Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if water and soap are not available.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue; throw the used tissue into a trash can.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, do not go to work or school; stay away from other people as much as possible.
  • Try to stay in good general health. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
